Barrier materials for different requirements

Materials and technology solutions – all in one

Barrier layers for films, packaging, and technical applications are part of everyday life and have become indispensable in, for example, the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetics industry, and in technical applications.

Together with customers and partners we develop innovative barrier concepts and optimize materials. In addition, we advise and support our customers right through to industrial implementation.

Advantages of our barrier materials:

  • High chemical and thermal stability
  • Transparency
  • Resistance to bending
  • Processing under gentle reaction conditions
  • Suitable for roll-to-roll manufacturing
  • Long processing times

Barriers against:

  • „Gases
  • Vapors
  • Flavors
  • Odors
  • Plasticizers
  • Migratable monomers

Additional functionalities can be introduced – using the modular principle (for suitable combinations)

  • „antistatic
  • antiadhesivea
  • antimicrobial
  • abrasion-resistant
  • active and passive corrosion protection

Lower costs and modification of commercial barrier films – a successful concept

State-of-the-art products with inorganic barrier layers provide good but not always good enough barrier properties. These barriers can be made more effective to meet higher product requirements. The Fraunhofer ISC achieves this by applying ORMOCER® barrier coatings to these films. The resulting synergetic effects lead to excellent barriers against oxygen and water vapor.

A world leader
The Fraunhofer ISC, part of the Fraunhofer POLO® alliance, develops state-of-the-art ultra barrier films suitable for roll-to-roll production processes.

Ultra barriers via:

  • good intrinsic barriers
  • disruption of defect growthin
  • inorganic barrier layers
  • longer diffusion paths between the defects
  • reduction of the mechanical stress compared to individual inorganic layers
  • planarization of the surfaces
  • defect coverage
  • mechanically stable top coat

Your benefits:

  • High barrier against oxygen and water vapor
    H2O: ca. 10-5 g/m2 d;
    O2:   ca. 10-5 cm3/m2 d bar
  • weather and temperature resistant
  • high flexibility
  • low-cost R2R production
  • weight reduction for the encapsulation of sensitive components
  • expanded usage of photovoltaic modules
  • favorable cost, eco-friendly coating process

We will gladly help you find solutions for your products.
